OVERHEAD CRANE

Cranes are transportation systems that provide great convenience in industry. There are different types depending on their intended use. Among these, various types of overhead cranes provide significant savings in both time and cost in both indoor and outdoor environments.

What is an Overhead Crane?

An overhead crane is a lifting system that operates by the horizontal movement of columns placed on a single or double track. In industry, these systems are also called “gantry cranes”. The lifting and transport device placed on a single or double column creates the bridge position, hence the name “overhead crane”.

In this system, the bridge is placed on both sides of an elevated frame and extends longitudinally along the path of the track. It can easily lift and transport heavy or long materials along the track. Overhead cranes can be made of steel box structures or “I” profiles for areas with narrower axle spacing.

How Does an Gantry Crane Work?

Overhead (gantry) cranes have both single and double rail working systems. The single rail system operates on the principle of moving small capacity loads on a single rail. The system includes parts such as the lifting motor, hook block, walking beam, bridge walking group, etc. The machine operates using electromagnetic or electro-hydraulic power application.

The pulleys on the bridge change the direction of the load. The ropes on the bridge provide the connection between the drum and the load. The hook blocks carry out the lifting and transport of the load. Connection elements such as traverses, clamps, suspension ropes ensure the safe transport of the load.

Usage Areas of Overheaded Cranes

Overhead cranes have a very wide range of an usage area. They are used in heavy industry, factories producing tonnage goods, open and closed warehouses, ports, power plants, and more. They are also widely used in industries such as petroleum and petrochemicals, railway construction, airports, hydroelectric power plants, ports, paper making, construction materials, metallurgy, and more.

What are the Advantages of Overheaded Cranes?

  • Can carry heavy loads up to 250 tons.
  • Saves time in carrying heavy loads.
  • Not only heavy loads but also small tonnage loads can be easily carried.
  • Provides an advantage in both indoor and outdoor use.
  • Easily usable in humid and rainy environments. Has a long service life.
  • Has full vertical lifting capabilities.
  • Provides the advantage of remote control.
  • Its motors have thermal protection.
  • They have a modular structure. They can be easily disassembled, moved to the desired location, and quickly installed.
  • Have a long-lasting and durable structure.
  • They have a lifting speed of 20 meters per minute and a trolley running speed of up to 40 meters per minute.
  • All movement systems are controlled by an inverter (power converter) and are standard two-stage.
  • Ensures safe use with lifting/lowering and travel limit sensors.

What are the Types of Overhead Cranes?

These cranes are divided into two types as single girder and double girder gantry overhead cranes.

1- Single Girder Overhead Cranes

A single girder overhead crane that moves by holding onto a column is designed mainly to carry light-tonnage loads. They have a maximum carrying capacity of up to 25 tons.

Single girder overhead cranes are mainly used in situations where the bridge span is small and the ceiling height is low. They are primarily preferred for their low cost and providing economical and reliable solutions in transportation and stacking.

Advantages of Single Girder Overhead Cranes

  • The construction weight is up to 35% lighter than double girder overhead cranes. As a result, the dead weight on the crane’s wheels is reduced. The load weight on the building is also lower.
  • The materials used are lighter and 25% cheaper than other cranes.
  • Has a smaller horizontal width, making it easier to approach the ends of a building.
  • Has a shorter manufacturing process.
  • Meets job safety standards to a great extent.
  • Ideal for low-ceiling areas and short axis spans.
  • Low investment costs.
  • Modular in structure, allowing for quick and easy installation.

2- Double Girder Overhead Cranes

Double girder overhead cranes are preferred for longer axle distances and heavier tonnage loads. The lifting group is located on the girder, allowing you to achieve the maximum lifting height you need. They are used in a wide range of applications, from the iron and steel industry to shipbuilding, marble and stone quarries, warehouses, and container loading and unloading.

In double girder overhead crane systems, the crane carriage is referred to as the “cat.” The lifting group on the crane carriage moves along the bridge axis on the walking rails located on the bridge girders. Additionally, a maintenance platform with a checkered plate base and approximately 50 cm width railing is located next to the bridge girder.

Double girder overhead cranes are manufactured in accordance with FEM, DIN, VFI, and CMMA standards. They can have a bridge span of up to 40 meters. The rotating table load lifting carriage can be produced with button control, remote control, operator control, single or double speed control as requested.

Double girder overhead cranes have the following features standardly:

  • Double-speed lifting motor
  • Overload protection
  • Sensors and bumpers for carriage and bridge walking stops
  • Maintenance platform
  • Driver-controlled carriage and bridge walking

Double girder overhead cranes are more suitable for indoor areas because legs installed in open areas will narrow the working area and hinder comfortable operation.

Advantages of Double Girder Overhead Cranes

  • Enables the safe lifting and transportation of heavy loads.
  • Provides maximum lifting height easily.
  • Maintenance and assembly can be easily carried out thanks to the maintenance platform on the bridge.
  • It is long-lasting and durable, and it can withstand corrosion for a long time thanks to special sandblasting and painting.
  • Allows the use of multiple lifting groups on the same bridge. A monorail lifting group can be adapted under the bridge if desired.
  • Offers different connection options and ideal compatibility with different building conditions.
  • Provides easy installation for optional equipment.
  • Provides high strength and strong performance.

Overhead Crane Prices

The prices of overheaded cranes for overhead use vary depending on their usage capacity and features. Whether the crane is single or double girder and whether it has optional features affects the prices. However, the pricing policy of the producing company is also a factor.

In the machinery industry, bridge cranes can be sold as both new and second-hand. Those who need more tonnage transportation systems and want to increase their production capacity sell their existing bridge cranes and buy a more capable one. Thus, both new and second-hand bridge cranes are available on the market.

Before buying a new or second-hand bridge crane, it is important to plan your long-term production capacity or workload very well. It is important that the machine you purchase meets your needs in the long term. While a 5-ton single girder bridge crane may be sufficient for your job in the short term, it may be inadequate in the long run. Instead, you may consider searching for a 10-25 ton capacity single girder bridge crane.

Second-hand bridge cranes are sold at more affordable prices than new ones. However, although these machines are long-lasting and durable, it is beneficial to conduct thorough research. If you cannot find a suitable, affordable, reliable, and guaranteed second-hand bridge crane, it may be better to buy a new one. You can buy it with an affordable price advantage and in installments by conducting a detailed research among companies.

Bridge cranes are also known as traveling cranes. There are two types of them, single and double girder cranes. Single girder bridge cranes are mostly preferred in places with up to 25-ton load carrying capacity and short axle spacing. Double girder cranes are used in areas where the axle spacing is long and larger tonnage loads of 10 tons and above are carried. While single girder cranes can also be used in open areas, double girder cranes are more ideal for indoor use. These machines are sold on the market as new and second-hand.
